Do vão duma janela do Instituto,
Observava eu, cheio de amargura,
Que uma velha, qual vida a noite escura,
Se cobria com insígnias de luto.
Um pouco contemplando aquele vulto,
Notei que eram relíquias da ventura,
Que todos sonham, com ingénua candura,
No princípio da vida, com tumulto.
Oh gente que numa lide constante,
Avara, cobiçosa e repugnante,
Buscais honras, vaidades e riquezas...
Parai um pouco, meditai na morte,
Reparai que é o fim de tanta sorte,
E o triste fim de todas as grandezas.
